MANILA, Philippines--University of Santo Tomas still found no match and extended its unbeaten run to seven games in the UAAP men's tennis tournament Friday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center courts.
The Tigers shut out Ateneo, 5-0, to move within a win of sweeping the elimination round, while La Salle also romped to a 5-0 wipeout of University of the East to keep the second spot with a 6-1 record.
UST sophomore James Cañete hardly broke a sweat in crushing Ateneo's Mark Joseph Avila, 6-0, 6-0, in the first singles match to set the tone in the lopsided tie.
The veteran tandem of Wilbur Orillana and Alexander Diego disposed of Ateneo's Julian Lagman and Miko Amoncio, 6-0, 6-1, in the doubles, while Raymond Villarete clinched the win for the Tigers with a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Gabriel Ruaro.
Although assured of victory, the Tigers did not let up as Keff Gamama and Keane Barraquias downed Leyan Moncera and Paul Cang, 6-1, 6-3. Maclean Barraquias capped the rout with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Ayo Canlas.
The Tigers will shoot for an 8-0 elimination sweep against La Salle at 12 noon on Sunday.
La Salle similarly coasted to straight set victories with Irwin Edwin de Guzman touching it off with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Novo Navarro.
Archers Juan Carlo Pantua and Laurence Andrew Magaway blanked the pair of AJ Villalon and Joseph Nieva, 6-0, 6-0, in the first doubles match, while Michael Basco prevailed over Michael Belen, 6-2, 6-1.
The other La Salle victors were David Alexander De Koenigswarter and John Will Baldonado over Rhoel Santiago and Ivan Orilla, 6-2, 6-1, and Jandrick de Castro over Lyndon Mantua, 6-1, 6-0.
